what is digital design ethnography?
A platform like Twitter is a construction of a front end that engages with the users, a back end that deals with complicated narratives its governance system, and economies that the system supports but are invisible on the front or back end. That said, to understand Twitter—or any part of the networked space— one must engage in designed interventions and modules that can create multiple avenues for engagement and creative mediums to study the space. I propose a methodology—”digital design ethnography”—that merges with cyberspace itself and morphs as cyberspace transforms. In my thesis research, I used this method to explore Twitter as a nation-state and understand access and citizenship on the platform. I employed digital design ethnography to mold my explorations into speculative interrogations, which helped me examine the platform organically to understand the nook and corners of Twitter.
